Chapter Nine

“Saylor,” Jasmine said as soon as she heard her friend pick up, “we have a serious problem.”

“Are you okay?” Saylor said. She was breathing hard.

Jasmine flopped back on her couch, kicking off her shoes and clutching a throw pillow to her chest.

“Why do you sound weird?” Jasmine asked. Then she grinned. “Oh my god, you were just having sex? Did I call you right after sex?”

Saylor sighed heavily. Jasmine gave a small laugh.

“Hi, Ryan!” Jasmine yelled. She knew Professor Sexy had to be just over Saylor’s shoulder. Ever since they got together last year they had been inseparable. Jasmine was happy for Saylor, her friend deserved a great love, but she was starting to get annoyed with their great love life. Saylor should think more about her single friends.

“Hi Jasmine,” Ryan said, his voice a bit muffled by distance.

“What is going on?” Saylor asked. “Why are you calling? Are you okay?”

“Physically, yes,” said Jasmine. “Emotionally? I am struggling.”

“Is it Theo?”

Jasmine hid her face under her arm.

“Why do you assume it’s Theo?” She asked.

Saylor laughed, “You always complained to me about Theo while you were in the same class. What has he done now? Stolen your homework? Copied your midterm?”

“Humped me in the library,” Jasmine said.

There was a pause before Saylor screeched, “What?”

“While I was working.”

“You’re turning into such a slut.” Jasmine could hear the grin on her friend’s face. “So are you two a thing now?”

“We are just friends,” said Jasmine, “because I told him that he shouldn’t think that we are dating.”

“That’s good,” said Saylor, “you’re laying out your boundaries.”

“I think I want to be dating,” said Jasmine.

“Oh,” said Saylor, “not very good then. Kind of confusing.”

“What do I do?” Jasmine moaned. “He is so annoying but so hot? He is also surprisingly good at making out, and a shifter to boot? And a brunette. Saylor, he has everything I am into except a good personality.”

“Is he really that bad?” Saylor asked. “Because, let’s face it Jas, you don’t spend more than five minutes with anyone if you actually hate them. You have little tolerance for idiots.”

“This is true,” said Jasmine, “he’s not terrible. He is just. So different than me? He doesn’t care about the right things? His jokes are so bad, and he is such a player. I don’t want to get close to him just to be another notch in his belt.”

“Opposites attract,” said Saylor.

“Ughhh,” said Jasmine, “don’t give me that.”

“Okay,” said Saylor, “do you want to know what I really think?”

“That’s why I called,” said Jasmine.

“You need to bring down your guard a little,” said Saylor. “You clearly like this guy. Try not to be so harsh, let the feelings develop naturally. Don’t stop everything just because you think you shouldn’t like him.”

Jasmine sighed, “You’re right. I get nervous and then I put my guard up. Just, what if he doesn’t like me?”

Saylor laughed.

“What?” Jasmine asked. “Don’t laugh at me!”

“I’m sorry,” said Saylor, still chuckling, “but this is the most middle school conversation we ever had.
